Good Shepherd opened in 1997 with 54 students in demountable classrooms with the Principal, Frances Kelly, 3 teachers and school secretary.
In 1997, a committee was formed consisting of our parents, Principal and three teachers to investigate how best to organise classes to meet the needs of learners. CEO personnel were also involved in the discernment.
Between 1998 and 2003 classes at Good Shepherd were organised according to Board of Studies syllabus stages. From 2004 classes have been organised into year groups from Kindergarten to Year 6, although teachers still plan in stage groups where applicable. The educational focus is on meeting the needs of individual learners. Our school provides an environment that focuses on personal progress rather than comparisons.
The school has completed 3 of 4 permanent building programs. The fourth is planned for future development. In 2004, six classes will be housed in demountable classrooms.
Good Shepherd caters for boys and girls through to Year 6, with a current enrolment of 550. The population is drawn from Hoxton Park, Hinchinbrook and Austral. It is anticipated that the maximum school enrolment will be 621 students.
The staff committed and dynamic. They work in co-operative teams and plan together for the needs of the students. They believe that learning should be fun and provide interesting, challenging and enjoyable learning experiences for the students.
Parents are very involved and welcomed at Good Shepherd. They assist in classrooms, library, various school committees and the canteen. They have been in active partnership with the school throughout its development.
