Part-time academic supervisor for class of performing arts students in Years 7-10, who also undertake daily distance education for academic subjects.

ACADEMIC ADVISER, THE THRIVE PROGRAM

(15-20 hours per week)
STARTS NOVEMBER 2022

Perform Australia is an acting school based in Canberra - a performing arts education provider and registered training organisation. We run a special full-time program called The Thrive Program, in which around 20 performing arts students in Years 7-10 spend half their day completing their academic subjects via distance education, and half their day singing, dancing and acting.

We are now seeking a very special teacher to oversee the program and supervise the students on a daily basis.

Perks of this role

• A chance to use your teaching skills in a unique educational environment

• Fewer responsibilities than a classroom teaching role

• No marking whatsoever!

• No daily lesson preparation - the distance education provider takes care of it; you offer support

• Support young people's education while they develop their passion and expertise

• Creative working environment among actors, directors, singers and dancers

What it's like

Each day will begin with you in the Thrive classroom, assisting the students with their distance education. Some will be watching lessons, others will be working on assignments, and others will be working with one another. You’re part supervisor, part helper. If you have a knack for English and are good at Maths, even if they're not your usual teaching area, this will be mighty helpful during this session. You’ll make sure it’s a safe and happy classroom while different students have different priorities.

You’ll also invest in each child by meeting with them individually every week, building a relationship with them and being involved in their pastoral care. You’ll also use that time to address any academic issues, develop ILPs, and work with them to ensure their success. You’ll be a point of liaison with the distance education provider as well.

From time to time, you'll run sessions to impart important life skills, like teaching them how to organise themselves and how to plan their work – as well as how to solve problems in friendships as they arise.

At the end of each term, you’ll supervise their distance education exams, and you’ll coordinate student reports in performing arts for Perform Australia. You’ll also handle other occasional tasks like orientation sessions, excursions and immunisations.

You’ll communicate with parents on a regular basis, about Perform Australia’s activities, performances, plans for the program, and about individual student concerns. You’ll be confident speaking to parents, understanding what matters to them about their child’s education and wellbeing.

You’ll meet with teachers on the Thrive program, who are professional performers, and support them as needed to help in their role as tutors, knowing they are not school teachers but that they bring a wealth of information and knowledge to share.

You are someone who is patient and kind with a heart for young people and their needs. You believe in the value of students exploring their talent in the performing arts. You’re also extremely organised and can teach young people to be the same. You are confident using tools to do this, like templates and software. And you’re a qualified, registered teacher who’s looking for a different way to use your educational skills.

Hours

The role is part-time (morning hours, mostly 8:30-12.15pm five days a week, with occasional additional hours meeting with parents, staff meetings, or completing administrative tasks).

Tasks

• Pastoral care

• Onsite classroom supervision

• Liaison with the distance education providers

• Tutoring assistance to students doing distance education work

• Supervision of examinations

• Liaison with parents about their children's wellbeing and academic studies

• Arrange substitute teachers in the performing arts program

• Contribute to timetabling of the Thrive performing arts program, in consultation with the CEO and Director of Artistic Development

• Develop, teach or facilitate a program of occasional workshops on personal development topics for students

• Occasional teaching on the performing arts program, if that's your area of specialty

• Administrative duties as required.

Field of education

As this role involves providing assistance to students across a range of academic subject areas, the position would suit a teacher with a background in one or more subject areas.
